Jury Rigged/Jerry Built
Novelists and other writers screw these terms up all the time. This week, I heard an NPR feature writer get it wrong: "jerry rigged", or maybe she said "jury built".
Jury rigged (not built) began as a nautical term referring to a temporary repair or replacement. It implies use of materials not designed for the purpose.
Jerry built (not rigged) means something slapped together, "built badly and with poor materials" (Oxford American Dictionary).
There will be a quiz later.
